How Long Will My VW’s Power Steering Pump Last?

RSW European Auto Repair advises that your Volkswagen’s power steering pump should last about 100,000 miles. Many pumps last even longer than this. If you notice any of the following problems, however, these are signs that the power steering pump is malfunctioning. Do not worry. We can replace the factory pump with a new one that will give you another 100,000 miles.

Steering Protests

The faulty power steering pump will begin to fuss every time you turn the steering wheel. It will groan or moan or it may even squeal. These protests are a sign that the steering pump is wearing down and out. As the steering pump gets worse, it will make even louder noises. Consequently, you will need to replace the power steering pump in order for your steering to be silent again.

Stiff Steering Wheel

You probably already know this but the steering pump is responsible for circulating the power steering fluid. It makes sure that the fluid circulates through the system so you get the benefit of its hydraulic assistance. If the steering pump is starting to go bad, it may have problems with the fluid’s circulation. Consequently, you will find it difficult to turn your Volkswagen’s steering wheel.

Unresponsiveness

There could come a time when the VW will not respond when you turn the steering wheel. If this is the case, try to get the VW off of the road and park it in a safe place. Then, call for a tow truck to have your Volkswagen towed to our shop. You don’t want to drive the VW if the steering system is not responding when you turn the steering wheel. This could open you up to an automobile accident.

Leaking Red Fluid

Another sign that it’s time to replace the VW’s steering pump is leaking fluid on your garage floor that is the color red. When the engine is cold, checked the power steering fluid reservoir to see if the level is low. If it is, it’s a safe bet that the power steering fluid is leaking out of the steering pump.

Silvery-Red Fluid

If you see silvery-red fluid in the overflow reservoir, you’ve got a serious problem. We hate to say it but the power steering pump is disintegrating. It is dissolving into the fluid and the silver color is caused by the metal from the pump.
