Why Is My Volkswagen’s Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

If your Volkswagen’s air conditioner is blowing hot air, RSW European Auto Repair can inspect the system, find the problem, and fix it. There are many reasons why a car’s air conditioner will not blow cold and refreshing air. We are going to list the common problems below. Bring your vehicle to our shop sooner rather than later to have the air conditioning system inspected so you can make sure the AC works throughout the hot summer months. We will keep you as comfortable as possible in your VW.

Malfunctioning Compressor

The compressor has two functions in the air conditioning system. The first thing it does is compress the refrigerant gas into a liquid. It then circulates that liquid through the air conditioning system to cool off the air that blows through the vents. The compressor likes to work hard and tends to malfunction if you haven’t run your vehicle’s air conditioner in a long time. If the AC has been off in your VW, it’s possible that the compressor is malfunctioning and this is why you have hot air.

Malfunctioning Condenser

The condenser cools off the refrigerant after it has gotten too hot. This always ensures that you have nice cold air blowing through the vents. The condenser uses its own fan and air inlets to reduce the coolant’s temperature. The condenser is located directly behind your VW’s grille, which means it is susceptible to problems from road debris, including clogged air inlets and damage. This will cause the condenser to malfunction and could inhibit its ability to cool off the refrigerant.

Malfunctioning Condenser Fan

As we just mentioned, the condenser fan helps to keep the refrigerant’s temperature cool. If the air conditioning system is having electrical problems, the fan may malfunction and refuse to run. It can also break down of its own accord if it is old.

Naturally, if the condenser fan isn’t working, it will not help cool off the hot refrigerant. Consequently, you will have hot air blowing through the vents because it is blowing hot refrigerant instead of cold refrigerant.

Reduced Refrigerant Levels

Finally, the refrigerant itself could be the problem. Over time, the refrigerant levels in the air conditioning system reduce due to evaporation. When the refrigerant is in its liquid form, it can also leak out of the air conditioning system via the hoses and hose connectors.
